How military discount verification works: ID.me, SheerID, GOVX & WeSalute
Almost every online military discount runs through one of four verification services. Here is what each one is, what it asks for, and how to get through the checkout without a headache.
Does it cost anything to verify?
ID.me, SheerID, and GOVX verification are free for you: the brand pays them. WeSalute (formerly Veterans Advantage) is different: it is a paid membership program whose card unlocks its partner discounts. A discount that requires WeSalute is really a discount for WeSalute members, so weigh the membership cost against what you'd save.

What you'll be asked for
Typically your name, branch, and service dates, checked against Department of Defense records. If the automatic check can't find you (common with name changes, Guard and Reserve service, or older discharges), you can usually upload a document instead: a DD-214 for veterans, a military ID or LES for those serving, or a dependent ID for spouses. Upload to the verification service only, never email a DD-214 to a store.
When verification fails
- Name mismatch: verify under the name in your military record, then update the account name after.
- Guard and Reserve: pick the status option that matches your current standing; "veteran" sometimes fails for current drilling members and "service member" works instead.
- Recently separated: DoD records can lag a few weeks; the document-upload path usually works when the automatic check doesn't.
- Spouses and dependents: not every brand extends the discount to family. Check the offer's fine print first so a failed verification isn't a surprise.
A note on privacy
These services exist so that stores never see your documents. That's the right direction, but you are still creating an account with a private company. Use a strong password, skip optional data sharing, and if a random small shop asks you to email discharge paperwork directly, walk away: every offer in our Verified Discounts directory links to the provider's official page so you can confirm the real process.
